On February 12, 2024, AIMS-Cameroon proudly joined the global commemoration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, marking the 9th edition of this pivotal event. Gathering a vibrant assembly of 60 students, 8 tutors, 10 staff members, and 5 visiting lecturers, the occasion was a testament to our commitment to advancing gender equality in STEM.
The highlight of the day was a captivating talk by the esteemed Prof. Claire David, whose address on “Embrace the Journey of Self-Discovery, Prioritize Mental Health and Pursue your Passions Fearlessly” resonated deeply with attendees. Claire’s words served as a guiding light, inspiring women to be steadfast in their pursuit of dreams while emphasizing the importance of understanding and support from both men and women in achieving gender equality in science.
During her presentation, Claire encouraged women to embrace their tenacity and boldly pursue their aspirations. She emphasized the need for mutual respect and belief in each other’s capabilities, stressing that diversity enriches the scientific landscape immeasurably.
Following the enlightening talk, female students engaged in meaningful discussions at the Limbe Botanical Garden, delving into the challenges encountered by women in STEM fields. These conversations fostered a supportive environment where experiences were shared, and solutions proposed, underscoring the collective determination to overcome obstacles and thrive in the scientific realm.
In addition to the inspiring activities spearheaded by Claire, AIMS-Cameroon embarked on a week-long celebration across multiple social media platforms. Through a series of compelling poster designs, we showcased the remarkable contributions and/or thoughts of our female alumni, lecturers, and staff in the field of mathematical sciences, including Prof. Nancy Neudauer, Prof. Claire David, Nessma Adil, Loyce Kayanula et Nathalie Wandji.
The International Day of Women and Girls in Science serves as a poignant reminder of the imperative of diversity and inclusivity in scientific endeavors. It acknowledges the invaluable contributions of women and girls to STEM disciplines throughout history and underscores the necessity of affording them equal opportunities and recognition. On February 11 each year, and every day, we honor the pioneering women and girls who boldly lead the way and forge a path towards a more equitable future in science.
