Today September 21st, 2021 is the International Day of Peace. The UN General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace. The day is celebrated all over the world under the theme: “Recovering Better For An Equitable and Sustainable World.” 

As the world heals from the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, the UN says we are inspired to think creatively and collectively about how to help everyone recover better, how to build resilience, and how to transform our world into one that is more equal, more just, equitable, inclusive, sustainable, and healthier. 

The pandemic has not only caused losses in human lives, broken down economies but also closed down institutions or scaled down their operations while testing their resilience. In Africa where peace could only result from widespread economic development and self-sufficiency, the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) showed resilience in pursuing its mission to enable Africa’s brightest students to flourish as independent thinkers, problem solvers and innovators capable of propelling Africa’s future scientific, educational and economic self-sufficiency. 

“We easily adapted to COVID-19 than other institutions,” said Prof. Dr. Mama Foupouagnigni the Chief Academic Officer of AIMS Global Network and Centre President of AIMS Cameroon. Different from other classical universities, AIMS trains brilliant students who can accelerate Africa’s transformation. Such quality education based on a unique and innovative pedagogic model as well as values of excellence, respect, Pan-Africanism and integrity, lay the groundwork for peace. 

Education has been hailed through generations as one of the most powerful tools which can be implemented to promote peace. This is because Education gives knowledge, boosts confidence and hope,  promotes independent thinking, inspires problem-solving skills, builds communication skills, opens doors, reduces poverty, increases political involvement, builds empathy and tolerance and cultivates respect. 

With over 342 graduates for different African countries since it was established in 2013, AIMS Cameroon is contributing in building future leaders who are more conscious of the stakes of building a stronger economy for the continent and optimistic because AIMS has equipped them with the knowledge and skills to generate development and promote peace
