The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) has learned with profound sorrow of the passing of Professor Joseph Dongho on 26 February 2026 in Bafoussam.
On behalf of the entire AIMS network, we extend our deepest condolences to his family, colleagues, students, and to the wider mathematical community in Cameroon and beyond.
Professor Joseph Dongho was a distinguished mathematician and devoted educator whose career was marked by intellectual rigor, institutional leadership, and an unwavering commitment to the advancement of the mathematical sciences. A respected scholar, his research made significant contributions to algebraic topology, Poisson geometry, homological algebra, and related areas of pure mathematics. Through his publications, collaborations, and sustained scholarly engagement, he played an important role in strengthening research culture and advancing mathematical inquiry both within Cameroon and internationally.
As Head of the Department of Mathematics at the University of Maroua, Professor Joseph Dongho was instrumental in consolidating academic programs, fostering research excellence, and mentoring generations of students who will continue to shape the future of mathematics in Cameroon. His leadership combined scholarly depth with a genuine dedication to nurturing young mathematicians and building strong academic institutions.
Professor Joseph Dongho was also a valued collaborator of the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences and actively took part in AIMS Cameroon activities, including research stays and participation in scientific meetings and conferences organized within the network. Through these engagements, he contributed meaningfully to scholarly exchange, collaboration, and the strengthening of a vibrant and interconnected mathematical community across Africa.
His involvement within the national mathematical community, including his contributions to the Cameroon Mathematical Union, further reflected his steadfast commitment to the development of mathematics education and research. His passing represents a profound loss to AIMS and to the broader scientific community.
We join colleagues across Cameroon and around the world in mourning this great loss and in honoring a life devoted to scholarship, mentorship, and service.
May his memory continue to inspire present and future generations.
