2nd Batch of 50 IN-SERVICE MATHEMATICS TEACHERS IN THE MFOUNDI DIVISION TO BE TRAINED

The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS), Teacher Training Program (TTP) will train its 2nd batch of 50 IN-SERVICE Mathematics Teachers from the 22nd of January to the 27th of January 2018. These fifty (50) teachers, (11) females and (39) male are of the Anglophone sub-educational system and will be trained on how to teach in a more engaging and practical way in a bid to ameliorate their pedagogy and increase secondary school students’ interest in mathematics.

The training will take place in two venues: at the CAAP, located by the Cathedral at Poste Centrale, Yaoundé, and ENS, which is host to AIMS TTP’s offices and simulation lab.

This is not the first training, the AIMS TTP has organized. They trained 89 Master trainers comprising Higher Teacher Training College (HTTC) Mathematics Lecturers and Mathematics Pedagogic Inspectors in October 2016 and completed their training in September on the use of the eLearning and Community of Practice (COP) platforms. TTP also recently trained the first 50 Mathematics teachers of the Francophone sub-educational system from the 28th of November to the 2nd of December 2017.

Prof Daniel Tieudjo, Director of the AIMS TTP program intimated: “This is the second batch of in-service teachers to be trained by the Master trainers whom we trained last year. This training is a reconfirmation of the AIMS-NEI mission to propel Africa’s brightest students to their ultimate potential, by giving them top notch training in mathematics. We believe that equipping mathematics teachers with the appropriate tools will fine tune their pedagogy, thus making more students interested in mathematics at an early stage and grooming them into the much needed problem solvers of our continent”.

The Mathematics Teachers Training Program is the first (1st) in the AIMS network. Set to eventually spread to the other centres, it is currently being replicated at the Rwanda Centre. With one third (1/3) of the trainees being female the TTP remains on track in the AIMS-NEI quest for gender inclusion.

ABOUT AIMS

The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences-Next Einstein Initiative (AIMS-NEI) is a pan-African network of centres of excellence for postgraduate education, research and engagement in the mathematical sciences. AIMS provides a framework for Africa’s brightest students to become innovators in a bid to drive scientific, educational and economic sufficiency on the continent. AIMS operates six centres of excellence in South Africa, Senegal, Ghana, Cameroon, Tanzania and Rwanda.
