Bernard OPOKU

Ghana

Taught Masters, 2014/2015

Ghanaian-born Bernard Opoku was selected into the structured master’s 2014-2015 Cohort of AIMS Cameroon students after graduating from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana-Kumasi, with a BSc degree in Mathematics in 2013.

With a research experience that includes Discrete and Continuous Optimization, Control Theory, Differential Equations, Probability and Statistics, Bernard Opoku worked after AIMS as an Assistant Lecturer of Mathematics at the Accra Institute of Technology in Ghana, with a focus on Engineering Mathematics, Differential Calculus and Statistics. He is also currently a committee member of Ghana Natural Language Processing (NLP), an open-source natural language processing project in Ghana.

“My research interests are mainly in the areas of Medical Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing & Mathematics of Data Science. I am also very keen to apply Machine Learning methods to solve real-data analysis problems. The goal is to address the computational and statistical challenges arising in modern data analysis, helping the discovery of hidden information in complex data.”

Bernard has all it takes to meet this goal for he gained a multitude of skills at AIMS Cameroon. “Honestly, I will say that AIMS-Cameroon system has improved my problem-solving skills, programming skills, leadership skills as well as developed me to be logical, self-confident, and technical.”

The committed mathematician who grew up in a small vicinity in Asamankese, the Eastern Part of Ghana, recalls why Mathematical Sciences ever appealed to him. “What attracted me to Mathematical Sciences was the dream to one day see myself designing and implementing mathematical algorithms for leading-edge scientific computing since this has been my long-term aspiration. My vision for Africa is to partake in highly scientific research associations in well-known institutions throughout the world helping to solve real-world problems.”
