Masters Student Immersed in Mathematical Modelling of Infectious Diseases
Aliou BOUBA is AIMS Cameroon 2019 alumnus and has done several research visits at Hochschule Mittweida University of Applied Sciences, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Kristan A. Schneider and Dr. Kristina B. Helle to carry out cutting-edge research on mathematical modelling of infectious diseases. He is currently a Masters student at Universite Paris Cité (France).
The 2018-2019 AIMS Cameroon MasterCard Foundation and 2019-2022 DAAD scholar has co-authored one COVID-19-related publication titled “Is increased mortality by multiple exposures to COVID-19 an overseen factor when aiming for herd immunity?” His research interests include predictive mathematical modelling, epidemiology, and global health.
Before coming to AIMS Cameroon, Aliou Bouna was a student in Master’s II at the University of Ngaoundere and was writing his thesis. But there, he never did any course related to his thesis which was on Mathematical modeling. At AIMS Cameroon, Aliou Bouba had the opportunity to attend different courses related to the mathematical modelling of infectious diseases that enriched his future work and studies. With the knowledge of software and skills in programming that he gathered at AIMS-Cameroon, Aliou was able to design and build different and complex predictive models in that field, especially for EBOLA.
Aliou recorded several achievements after graduating from AIMS Cameroon. He defended his Master’s II thesis at the University of Ngaoundere on July 23, 2021, and travelled to Germany as a guest researcher for three months, working in the group known as “Maths Against Malaria”. He gave a talk during the annual meeting (virtually) of the American Society for Tropical Medicine and Hygiene in 2020 (ASTMH) on ”Sustaining Management by Predictive Modelling”. He also gave a talk during the third edition of the International Week of Hochschule Mittweida University of Applied Sciences under the theme: “Strengthening European-African Partnership: Challenges and Opportunities”.
Aliou’s passion for Mathematical sciences is immense. He believes that Mathematical sciences is one of the most famous fundamental sciences and learning about mathematics is always enthusiastic and a fancy thing for him. “Mathematical sciences is a spine of all other sciences because from it you can shift and learn fields and you can also combine both for interdisciplinary study. Mathematical sciences help to solve complex problems through different techniques and methods,” he says.
Guiding him is a vision for Africa. “My vision for Africa is a world where African scientists are able to solve African problems such as infectious diseases, climate change, food security or socio-political issues by themselves and contribute to the world at large.”
