On March 13th, 2024, the fun aspect of mathematics was demonstrated in Limbe as students, educators, and mathematics enthusiasts gathered to celebrate the International Day of Mathematics. This year’s theme, “Playing with Mathematics,” inspired a day filled with exploration, creativity, and fun.
The celebration, organized by AIMS-Cameroon students in collaboration with SONARA School (aka Ecole SONARA) and the South West Association of Mathematics Teachers (SWAMPT), was a testament to the universal language and joy of mathematics. Students from different schools in Limbe including NGEA School, Government Bilingual High School (GBHS), Government High School (GHS), and Ecole SONARA came together to participate in various activities centered around mathematical play, including a mathematical problem solving competition. Ultimately, GBHS emerged victorious, showcasing their prowess in mathematics and critical thinking.
The highlight of the event was not just the competition itself, but the significant role played by AIMS-Cameroon students in organizing and coordinating the entire event. From crafting challenging questions to ensuring a smooth flow of activities, they demonstrated leadership and initiative throughout the celebration, and their efforts were indeed instrumental in making the event a resounding success. AIMS-Cameroon students seized the opportunity to deliver a talk on Artificial Intelligence, present engaging math games, and inspire their younger brothers/sisters to pursue STEM subjects passionately.
In his closing remarks, the Director of the host school (Ecole SONARA) expressed gratitude expressed to AIMS-Cameroon for the institute’s ongoing support in fostering educational initiatives across Limbe. He particularly acknowledged AIMS-Cameroon’s longstanding partnership with Ecole SONARA, underscoring the importance of collaboration in advancing STEM education.
Events like these serve as a testament to the power of community engagement in nurturing young talent and fostering a culture of learning. By partnering with local schools and organizations, institutions like AIMS can indeed make a meaningful impact on education and inspire the next generation of innovators.
AIMS-Cameroon expresses it gratitude to Ecole SONARA for hosting the event.
