Oumar Ndaibou of Terminale at Lycee Bilingue de Maroua, one of the Regional Laureates representing the Far North in the AIMS-Cameroon National Mathematics Olympiad, suffered an accident on his way to the testing center only a few minutes before the start of the competition, on May 15th, 2021. Bruised as a result of a motorbike accident, his injuries could not stop his determination to contest for the position of best Male Mathematician in Terminale. Braving through this challenge, Oumar had little or no thoughts that the unfortunate incident would influence his success. “I did not doubt much when writing. I hoped to get an attestation or a scholarship. To tell the truth, I would love to go to a pilot school or become an architect, or an engineer”.
Oumar further expressed his expectations and future plans as reasons for his bravery to become the National Mathematics champion of his class. When asked what his drive was and what advice he could share with his peers concerning Mathematics, Oumar said: “I am motivated to do Mathematics so far as it leads to my goals in life”. And to his contemporaries, he encouraged them to: “Make good use of Mathematics as it is found in all domains in life, thus you need to understand maths well”.

Oumar also expressed gratitude to the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences Teacher Training Program for not abandoning him in his trying moment:“I will also like to thank you – AIMS TTP for taking care of me after my accident”. AIMS TTP ensured this brilliant candidate had the necessary medical attention he needed, and a replacement of his damaged school uniform alongside adequate moral support from the Regional delegates and teachers who accompanied him and his mates to represent the Far North Region at the National Olympiads.
After transparent assessment of the candidates, the eight (8) National Olympiad Champions (four boys and four girls) of the competing classes: Terminale, Troisieme, Upper Sixth, and Form Five came from the Littoral, Centre and West Regions. These champions shall be recognized at an event to be hosted by AIMS TTP in July 2021.
